Unified

Unified is a monumental stainless steel sculpture created for BayCare's new hospital campus, commissioned to give physical form to the values the institution carries into public service. Standing 14 feet tall and weighing 4,000 pounds, the piece is built from five curved stainless steel plates, each ten feet long and cut from 3/8" plate, rolled and shaped individually so that no two surfaces catch the light the same way.

Cut through each plate is one of the organization's five core values — Excellence, Respect, Dignity, Responsibility, and Trust — the words rendered as negative space, visible only as light passes through the steel or falls across its curved surface. Individually, each plate carries its own character: a distinct curve, a distinct word, a distinct presence. Brought together, they lean into and against one another, balanced at a single point of contact, five separate forms resolving into one unified structure.

The sculpture's plates are finished in a palette of grey, blue, and light blue, matching the hospital's brand colors, with each panel taking on a slightly different hue depending on its curve and the angle of the light. The color shifts subtly across the piece throughout the day, the painted surfaces catching sun and shadow differently as the panels twist and lean — the piece changing character much as the values it embodies are meant to be lived differently in every interaction, yet remain, at their core, the same five principles.

Sited at the entrance to the hospital, Unified greets patients, staff, and visitors alike, standing as a public statement of the institution's commitment — and as proof that five distinct forms, given careful balance, can stand as one.
