The Connection

The Connection is a monumental aluminum sculpture that begins fused to the wall and gradually releases into open space, suspended above the conference room it inhabits. Composed of interwoven ribbons of cut and fastened 1/8" aluminum sheet, the piece unfurls across 36 feet, its layered forms twisting, converging, and threading through one another like currents caught mid-motion.

Created for Ajax Paving Industries, the sculpture is a physical rendering of the creative process itself — imagined here as it happens in the room below, where engineers and designers gather to conceive the roadways that will shape the landscape. The work traces that process from origin to expression: rooted in the wall, dense and structural at its source, before loosening into sweeping, weightless gestures that seem to move through the room on their own momentum.

The piece speaks to something less tangible than its material — the spark of inspiration, and the almost spiritual connection between an idea and its creation. Its tangled, converging lines evoke the overlapping paths of a highway interchange, but also something more elemental: the moment a thought takes physical form, pulled out of nothing and given shape and structure.

At 36 feet by 22 feet, The Connection is scaled to dominate the space it occupies, built to be experienced from below, from the side, in passing and at length — its suspended mass shifting continually as light moves across its layered aluminum surfaces throughout the day.
